It is sometimes easy to be caught up in the moment of having a particular product for your home or having a building design idea that you would like to implement rather than seriously considering if it is practical and makes for comfortable living.

All too often over the years we have seen some elements put into place that can cause more work in the long run and other elements that just make living uncomfortable. Here are some examples.

PRODUCT SELECTION

Glass

Glass is beautiful but in reality, this can be high maintenance especially around pools, stair cases and showers. If you have children and are planning on living in your house for a while you need to ask the question, do you have time to clean the glass on a regular basis or to pay someone to clean the glass. If cleaning or paying for a cleaner is not your thing then seriously consider other products that will require less work.

Splashbacks

There are so many choices of splashbacks for consumers but rarely do we think of maintenance until it is installed. Tiles are low maintenance and are a fabulous choice and some glass options are great too but if you choose to go with a dark glass option don’t be surprised after every use of the hot plate that you see every splatter across the glass. Maintenance in cleaning this can be intense from hot soapy water to using glass cleaner afterwards. Can you image doing this after every use!

Appliances

Some of the latest appliances can seem so exciting that you can get lost in the moment and purchase it without considering whether it is practical or not. Consider a knock-on dishwasher, this pricey product came out some years ago, it was flashy and it cleaned well. Although it appears like a great product can you image knocking on it twice every time you want to open a dishwasher! Very annoying.

Dark Flooring

There are so many products to pick when selecting flooring from concrete, tiles, wooden, bamboo… the list goes on. They are all good products but some require less maintenance than others. Concrete, wood and bamboo can be more forgiving for seeing every bit of dust and grime on the floor but as soon as you choose a dark colour then cleaning becomes a necessity in your life. Consider black floors although they look fabulous, they need constant cleaning in order for your floors to look presentable. Every bit of dust, hair and dirt becomes magnified!

DESIGN CONCEPTS

People love constructing building concepts in their mind but when seriously meditating on an idea have you carefully thought about enjoyment of living. Here are some examples.

Fireplace and TV Feature Wall

A TV over a gas fireplace looks flash but before implementing the idea consider where will the lounge be positioned and how high should the TV recess be. If you position the TV too high then you will be forever having a tilted neck while watching it, making it an unenjoyable and unrelaxing space to be in.

Positioning of Appliances

Most people prefer to place dishwashers near their kitchen sink but do you often think about the type of dishwasher you have and where you like to position your time in the kitchen. If you have a dishwasher that has buttons on the outside and you are washing the dishes leaning on the kitchen bench edge then it is quite possible that buttons can be pushed unnecessarily and this can be quite annoying if you are turning the dishwasher on and off unintentionally all the time.

Quite Enjoyment

Privacy is important in the home especially when sharing with other people as this can encroach on our enjoyment of living. Doors on bathrooms and toilets in ensuites and doors into formal living areas are often overlooked and are seen as an expense that is not needed. In reality if you have a couple where one starts work early then the one sleeping will be disturbed by the one getting ready. Consider a family where a couple wants to watch TV in the lounge and their kids want to watch You Tube in the family room, now consider the two TV’s competing against each other in order for everyone to hear. This can create great annoyance that is not needed.

The appropriate choice of products and design elements needs to be seriously considered before these ideas are implemented. Well thought out planning can bring peaceful and enjoyable living but also can help in the long term when it is time to sell the home. Buyers will be looking at all aspects of the home and if it is built to please the majority of buyers then this can help you to achieve the very best-selling price for your property.

Our advice to all those thinking of building, take the time now to seriously consider all building ideas to ensure the best living for the future.
